Cryogenic liquid hydrogen storage
Cryogenic liquid hydrogen storage is a cryogenic hydrogen storage technology that utilizes the physical properties of hydrogen. After the hydrogen is compressed, it is cryogenically cooled to below 21K (about -253°C), and the physical state changes to become liquid hydrogen, which is then stored in an adiabatic vacuum container (Dewar flask). The advantage of low-temperature liquid hydrogen storage is that the volume energy of hydrogen is high, and the density of liquid hydrogen reaches 70.75kg/m³, which is about 850 times the density of hydrogen under standard conditions. Even at high pressure, the volumetric hydrogen storage density of liquid hydrogen is rounded off. For example, the hydrogen storage density of 80Mpa composite high-pressure hydrogen storage is about 33kg/m³, which is only 46.6% of that of low-temperature liquid hydrogen storage. However, the boiling point of liquid hydrogen is extremely low (-252.78°C), and the temperature difference with the ambient temperature is extremely large, so the thermal insulation of the hydrogen storage container is very high. For large-scale, long-distance hydrogen energy storage and transportation, low-temperature liquid hydrogen storage has great advantages.
Types of liquid hydrogen storage
The key technology of cryogenic liquid hydrogen storage lies in the liquid hydrogen storage tank. According to the different forms of use, it can be divided into fixed, mobile and tank containers. Fixed liquid hydrogen storage tanks are commonly used spherical storage tanks and cylindrical storage tanks for large-volume storage. The mobile type generally adopts a horizontal cylindrical shape, which has a certain impact resistance to meet the needs of use during transportation. Similar to LNG tank containers, tank containers can realize direct storage and supply from liquid hydrogen plants to liquid hydrogen users, reduce losses in the process, and have flexible transportation methods.
Development status of low temperature liquid hydrogen storage in China
Cryogenic liquid hydrogen is still in its infancy and is mainly used in the aerospace field. Compared with the commonly used aviation kerosene, liquid hydrogen as aviation fuel can greatly improve various performance parameters of aircraft. The technological blockade has severely restricted the development of liquid hydrogen in China, and it is expected that technological breakthroughs will drive industrialization. The United States, Europe, and Japan have relatively standardized standards and regulations for the storage and use of liquid hydrogen, including hydrogen refueling stations. The liquid hydrogen development industry chain is relatively complete. Therefore, nearly 1/3 of the hydrogen refueling stations abroad are liquid hydrogen. Hydrogen refueling station. As a major producer of liquid hydrogen, the United States has always adopted a strategy of "strict embargo and no exchange" against China, and it has also restricted companies from its allies, such as Air Liquide and Linde, from selling equipment and technologies to China. At present, the core problem is still high cost, and key equipment and systems still rely on imports. The high cost also leads to the fact that there are few civilian liquid hydrogen factories, and most of them are demonstration projects.
